A Brief History of Photo Dynamic Therapy

Lase Med Inc.'s patented L.I.E.S.H. Therapy is an improved form of Photo Dynamic Therapy, or PDT. Originally PDT was introduced under the name of PRT or Photo Radiation Therapy and it was developed by the German physician, Friedrich Meyer-Betz, whose first study was performed in 1913. During his research, he tested the effects of hematoporphyrin, used as a photosensitizer, on his own skin, and for some still inexplicable reason, deduced that in the process of PRT a "singlet" oxygen was produced, responsible for the death of cancer cells.

Due to the fact that such research was carried out early last century, we can assume that an incandescent light source was used and that, based on the inefficiency of such sources, the results were at best limited.

In the 1970's, with the introduction of the first medical LASER systems, a chemist named Thomas J. Dougherty established PDT as a field of study, and has worked in this field for years, producing a large amount of published research papers, but still insisting on the assumption that the treated cancer was being killed by the elusive singlet oxygen.

Up to this date, traditional PDT has had limited success in treating cancer, since the photosensitizers used have the wrong absorption characteristics and are retained by the skin for an unacceptable amount of time, which interfere with the penetration and effectiveness of the method.

In the mid 1980's, the founders of Lase Med Inc, henceforth referred to as the Lase Med Technical Team, while working on weapon designs, accidentally stumbled on a way to safely and effectively destroy cancer. While initially investigating what was being done in the newest non-systemic cancer research at that time, the Team determined that both Meyer-Betz and Dougherty had misinterpreted the results of their testing.

The Lase Med Technical Team, based on pure science principles, determined that the cancer had not been killed by the so called singlet oxygen, but by the heat produced with the reaction between the light and the photosensitizer, as their initial concept indicated.

They put that theory to the test after they developed the prototype of the LAILT System in the 1990's, and the L.I.E.S.H Therapy was then born and patented.

In the year 2000, the Lase Med Technical Team began working with physicians, who were practicing alternative medicine at their facilities, to treat cancer patients with the L.I.E.S.H. Therapy, and the great results astonished even the very members of the Team.

In 2004, Lase Med Inc added a MD to their staff, and the Team opened its own facility to treat skin and breast cancer patients.

Up to this point, the healing process, following the L.I.E.S.H. Therapy, has been left to the immune system of the patients, and for this reason has been extremely slow and sometimes uncomfortable, even more so than the healing from a major wound, creating discontent and doubt in some patients.
Such doubts have unfortunately led patients to follow unenlightened advice, and to cause harm to themselves.

In the past few months the members of the LASE MED, Inc Team thought they had finally been able to secure the cooperation of a couple of progressive members of the medical establishment, and in this way be able to offer to patients the alternative of accelerated healing, through surgical removal of the dead tissue only.

Unfortunately, this was nothing more than another mirage seen by the Team of dreamers at LASE MED, Inc., thinking that the purpose of medicine is to do what is best for the patients, not the medical Industry.

Consequently, LASE MED, Inc., is back to searching for a simple means to accelerate the natural process of dead tissue removal, but at this point a possible cooperation with the medical establishment has been totally ruled out.
